Beat the LA humidity with my hot weather skincare tips

Hey guys!

So I am a huge fan of the “dewy” skin look…but lately this LA humidity has me looking like I am forever in work-out mode! I know I’m not the only one feeling oilier and greasier, so I want to share some simple tips to a shine-free face.

Cleansing

If you haven’t already, switch to an oil-free gel cleanser. If your skin can tolerate it, look for one with salicylic acid which will help exfoliate and prevent breakouts. You can also invest a cleansing tool like the like the Clarisonic brush for deeper pore cleansing.

Lighten up on Moisturizers

Trade in your heavy creams for a lightweight moisturizer. I love Skinceuticals hydrating B5 Gel because it’s an oil free serum with hyaluronic acid, so your skin stays hydrated but not greasy.

Don’t skip SPF!

There are so many sunscreens on the market in literally every texture. During the humidity, I recommend switching to a mattifying formula. My favorite is Obaji’s Sun Shield SPF 50. It is a zinc based non-whitening formula and even comes in a tinted option, which I am currently obsessed with!!

Get low-key chill on your makeup routine

I know we are all equally obsessed with contour and highlighter, but sweat and oil production combined with heavy makeup can lead to a literal melt down. Keep things light, and use a tinted moisturizer or BB cream like Smashboxes Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35,  my go-to since it first came out. Also, avoid anything with glitter or sparkles – which can make your skin look sweatier and extra shiny!

Stock your fridge – with sheet masks!

Lately I have noticed tiny broken capillaries, and just overall redness – so I stocked up on a ton of Korean sheet masks packed with peptides, aloe and hyaluronic acid. I keep them in my fridge and apply them 3-4 times a week for a calming facial treatment. They feel amazing, and the more frequently I use them, the better my skin feels.

I did a series of 3 sheet masks last week and lightweight makeup resulting in a #nofilterneeded selfie 😉

I will be sharing more tips for beating the humidity on next weeks blog for those who are looking for more aggressive treatments. Until then, what changes have you seen in your skin with all this humidity? What changes do you make during the summer to your skincare routine? I’d love to hear your tips!

Stay cool…like a cucumber loves!

#1 Summer Skincare Tip!

Summer Tip #1 Less Exfoliation!

If you are anything like me, and are obsessed with scrubs…then you tend to get a little carried away. But it is imperative that during the summer months to decrease over-exfoliation, because too much of a good thing can cause adverse effects.

Over-scrubbing can can compromise your skins’ moisture barrier and the harsh rays of the sun during Summer months wreak havoc on your skin – leading to burns, pigmentation and sunspots.

So how much exfoliation is enough during summer months?

My recommendation is 1-3 times per week. Exfoliation does assist in shedding dull skin and build up, prevents clogged pores and improves better product absorption. If you notice redness, dry patches or irritation..then you may be exfoliating a bit too much.

My top gentle scrubs for Summer are:

Samples for San Francisco

Hey guys!
So I am getting ready for the long 3 day weekend and heading up to San Fran. I wanted to share with you my favorite beauty miniatures and see what some of your favorites are when you travel!

I am actually a minimalist when it comes to packing (that way I have more room for shopping lol) so I tend to pack sample size products that I have collected when I travel!

Who else has no shame when it comes to asking for samples?! *Hands up emoji
I actually refuse at this point to invest in a product without knowing for sure that it will work for me. So I absolutely ask for samples! And I would actually encourage you to ask your esthetician because truth is, we love giving away our secrets. And we would rather you sample than be disappointed in what we recommend. So don’t be shy – ask to try!

So here is what I’ve got so far in my bag! Warning: objects in picture are much smaller than they appear 😉

The only product here that is not a sample is the bumble and bumble pret-a-powder, an amazing dry shampoo..and one I never travel without! I featured it because the travel size is small but goes a long way and it’s only $12 at Sephora. Worth it!

I have been breaking out like crazy in the LA heat, especially along my hairline. So I am taking the PCA Skin acne gel to help with those annoying break outs. I also packed the Active Serum by Is Clinical and the Lytera 2.0 by Skinmedica. Both of these are mini treatments and help with my melasma and discoloration. I like to layer them under my SPF and alternate them in the evening.

And I looooove Skinceutials trial sizes you guys! They really give you a lot to try and the eye cream sample can last you a few weeks..long enough to see subtle changes! I love it under my concealer and at night obviously.

The last sample here is Latisse. I wore lash extensions for over a year and they completely destroyed my natural lash, so latisse has saved me. Allergan does promotions on their brilliant distinctions site where if you purchase a full size you get a sample free. The sample lasts about 8 weeks for me and I try not to miss a day, so this liquid gold is going with me!

Are you like me and leave behind your full size products when you travel? Which ones are your faves?

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Overboard

I have a tendency to go a little overboard when it comes to my daily skincare routine, and I’m guilty of not taking my own advice when it comes to product useage, which is “sometimes less is more..”

Even though I know better than to pile it on..it’s hard to practice patience when it comes to wanting to see results. So what do I do? I go crazy three nights in a row by applying a strong retinol, followed by a kojic acid lightener, and topped off with a glycolic moisturizer. Typically, you would not want to mix this many active ingredients – but like so many of us, I just wanted to see the quickest results possible!

Go figure, I wake up this beautiful, sunny, Sunday morning in LA with a full blown skin reaction. All because I wasn’t patient enough to take my own advice!

Bad news is, my face was itchy, rashy and felt like it was pulsating. The 90 degree heat just aggravated it even more. Good news is, I knew how to alleviate the problem. PCA Skin has a product called apres peel which is a hydrator that has a .5% hydrocortizone in it. I applied this sweet smelling balm. It has apricot oil and chasteberry fruit extract, so not only is it soothing..it’s packed with antioxidants! Immediately I felt the burning sensation calm. I slathered on my SPF 50 and out to brunch I went.

Tonight I reapplied the balm and it felt like my skin completely soaked it in. I am a lot less red and itchy. I also mixed a hyaluronic moisturizer by Benev, (a little skincare cocktailing) and immediately felt plumper and less peely.

Obviously, I went a little crazy with the exfoliators thinking my skin could handle a more aggressive routine. Everything is trial and error when it comes to finding what works with your skin type. I’m not afraid of experimenting with products, but today was a good reminder for me that going overboard can almost make you miss brunch!but seriously, could cause more harm than good.
